Vermilion Men's Basketball Grabs FIrst Win Of The Season
Fighting through an early season snowstorm, the Ironhawks of Minnesota North - Vermilion came out victorious at Oak Hills Christian College on Sunday, pushing to a 76-63 win in Bemidji. The win marks the programs first win since a triumph over Fond Du Lac Tribal College on February 5th, 2020.
In a tightly contested first half, the Ironhawks were able to head into the lockerroom with a 35-34 lead. After the break, Vermilion was able to hold the Wolf Pack without a basket for the first 6 minutes, helping to push their lead to double digits. Refusing to quit, Oak Hills battled back to get it as close as seven before Vermilion was able to extend out the lead to 13 to close out the game.
The Ironhawks were led by their big men, with Freshman Sammy Russ (St. Paul, MN) leading the way with 27 points and 12 rebounds on 12-15 shooting, along with Sophomore Ronald Ducros (New Orleans, LA) with 18 points and 8 rebounds on 9-12 shooting. Also chipping in was Sophomore CJ Brown who had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
The Ironhawks make their 2022-23 home debut this coming Thursday as they host the Riverland Community College Blue Devils, currently the #3 ranked team in the nation at Division III Junior College, with tip scheduled for 7:30 PM.
